Features of the Lab
HomeLab is a Michigan Research Core Facility. That means: we’re here to help. We provide the space, technology, props and expert staff to bring in-context research, learning, and training to life at Michigan.
The Space
The lab is designed as a fully functional apartment that can be staged to mimic a variety of settings that we encounter in our daily lives. People are at the center of our vision, and we facilitate human centered design in a wide variety of contexts.
A simulated one-bedroom apartment in the heart of U-M Central Campus with convenient parking. Fully functional and reconfigurable layouts.

Training at HomeLab
We’re happy to host workshops and training sessions to meet your needs. Below are some examples of workshops that we conduct at the HomeLab.

Testimonials
I study the dynamic between patients and family caregivers. How do we achieve this “just right balance [of care]?” In the HomeLab we can bring care dyads in and have them work through some tasks just like they would in their own home.

The HomeLab provides a real-world environment that’s safe and controlled where we can collect rigorous scientific data [on our novel prosthetics], while pushing our technology’s functional performance to its limits.

My focus is to develop and better deliver interventions to reduce fall risk in older adults. The HomeLab presented a unique environment to relate sensor signals to a video of the body’s movement as people go through daily tasks. We were able to create challenges [trip hazards] as they move through that space.

I am interested in how shoulder muscle function changes in women undergoing a variety of treatments for breast cancer. I want to translate our very sophisticated biomechanical measures from our laboratory to patients’ homes. The flexibility of the U-M HomeLab has been a fantastic asset for my laboratory.

Our Services
Reservation service tiers and recharge rates
HomeLab reservations are available in three service tiers to suit different needs. We are happy to help match your project to a service tier, or help identify a custom solution.
A list of HomeLab recharge rates is provided for convenience. Contact us to help develop a budget estimate that suits your design. We are happy to estimate costs, build budget justifications, write Letters of Support, and provide boilerplate for grant applications.

HomeLab’s primary function is research and training, but we are open to exploring other academic uses of this unique space. Just reach out.
